Tell Me More

The goal of Project D.A.R.T.A.

We are Team Lego Dynamics, working to make archaeology more accessible for everyone. Inclusive design is central to our mission, opening doors for archaeologists with disabilities.

From Wisconsin, we introduce Project D.A.R.T.A.—a commitment to keeping archaeology open to all.

Project D.A.R.T.A. develops better tools and methods, removing barriers that limit participation in fieldwork and research. Welcoming more voices strengthens how we preserve and understand human history.

Different perspectives make archaeology stronger. With Project D.A.R.T.A., accessibility and inclusivity are the foundation of discovery.

Accessibility

Voice commands, MR overlays, and remote control make digs accessible to all.

Innovation

Combining drones, GPR, AI, and mixed reality to discover artifacts faster.

Affordability

Modular design with affordable tiers—bringing advanced archaeology tools to more people.

What's included

This is what you get when you choose Project D.A.R.T.A.:

Drone Icon

Drones

Large drones with extended batteries scan terrain unreachable by traditional carts.

GPR

Dual-frequency ground penetrating radar reveals both deep structures and fine details without digging.

Mixed Reality

MR glasses provide real-time overlays, voice commands, and audio feedback for accessibility.

Artificial Intelligence

AI software analyzes scans instantly, identifying potential artifacts and reducing site selection time.

More About D.A.R.T.A.

The field of archaeology has long posed challenges for professionals with disabilities due to its physically demanding nature. Archaeologists often spend weeks or months excavating, with less than 5% of a dig site typically containing artifacts. This leads to delays and increased costs. Approximately 15% of archaeologists have mobility and physical disabilities, and uneven, remote, and hazardous dig sites further hinder participation.

To address these issues, we developed Project D.A.R.T.A. (Dual-frequency Artifact Recognition and Terrain Analysis), a drone equipped with Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR). This technology allows for rapid surveys of large or hard-to-reach areas, reducing time and labor costs. By overlaying GPR data and 3D models onto real-world views, researchers can quickly gain context to make informed excavation decisions.

Mixed Reality glasses allow archaeologists and experts to see excavation data overlaid directly onto the real world, guiding digs in real time from anywhere. Instead of archaeology being defined by physical endurance, MR shifts the focus to collaboration and inclusivity, opening the field to diverse talents. With immersive overlays and remote connectivity, specialists can interpret scans, direct drones, and share insights instantly — transforming archaeology into a technology-driven discipline where everyone can participate, regardless of location or mobility.
